Noticing a large loss in his inventory, the owner of the store called his personnel manager into his office. After describing the problem, he said, “I want you to find and hire a cross-eyed detective.” “A cross-eyed detective? Why?” he asked in amazement. “I want someone who can look in two directions at the same time,” came the reply.
That was exactly the problem the Apostle Peter faced on the stormy sea. When he saw His Lord walking on the water, he cried out, “Tell me to come to You by walking on water.” “All right, come,” invited Jesus. It started out fine. But when Peter saw the high waves, he became frightened and began to sink. Why? Because he began to look at both the waves and the Lord.
The Apostle Paul did not have that problem. He planted churches, was a missionary and an evangelist, became our first theologian, taught many to be disciples and church leaders, and wrote many letters that still guide believers today. How did he do all of this? He said, “This one thing I do!” Paul kept his eyes fixed on the Lord rather than on the storms that surrounded him. The question is not whether the storms will come, but where we choose to fix our gaze.
When we stop trying to look in two directions and instead focus fully on Jesus, we can walk through the impossible with confidence and peace.
Prayer:
Father, like Peter, I get distracted by the winds and waves of life. Help me to do one thing: always keep my eyes on You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
